Congratulations on your first venture into blogging! The work does not stop here though since you can add a blog theme or template to make your blog look more interesting. Your blog template should be striking enough to catch your readers’ attention, but should define the message of the main topics that you are hoping to convey to viewers. Blog templates are full of icons, layouts and color schemes. If you are a web designer or have knowledge about coding in HTML and CSS then this will be easy. In case you don’t have a clue of how to code and make the right design, it’s probably about time to look for your blog template.

The danger of using templates is that they come across as being repetitive, which translates into being boring. The solution would be to use more than one template for writing. Templates can give you a standard format to follow which allows viewers to read faster. The outline provided by the template prevents the writer from becoming sidetracked so he/she will not waste time writing something not related to the topic. In addition to this, a template can help you think faster since there is a smooth transition from one article to the other. Not to mention templates are great for CMS (content management systems).

The Advantages of Using Blog Templates Are:

            • It saves precious time. Through using a blog template directly with your blog you will not waste time coding and designing. Blog templates allow your work to appear professional.

            • Writer and reader friendly. Blog templates provide an easy interaction between the readers and the writer.

            • Faster turn-around time.

Paid Templates or Free Templates?

Most people would grab at the chance of getting something for free rather than paying for it. But should you take advantage of this? There are limitations though on something that is given for free. Blog templates or themes are pre-designed themes that you can use for your blog. There are many sites on the web that offer a wide choice of free blog templates. Free blog templates offer designs for preview and with a little editing on your part the selected template will be added to your blog. An advantage of having free blog templates is that they are obviously free! They are easy to set up too aside from the beautiful designs that can be eye candy. There is a risk though that the templates that you have chosen have already been used by other bloggers as well so your blog will look similar to blogs that use the same template.

Unless you are good at using HTML code you may be able to customize the blog template that you choose. It is limiting though if you are new at this since there is not much you can do to make the template uniquely yours. Ads will pop up within your template since you got it for free and you don’t have control over them. These ads will showdisplay that you had just copied a pre-designed template for your personal blog. Free blog templates can also come with spyware or embedded malicious code. They can also be easily compromised by hackers. Your options are limited with free blog templates but this will suffice if you do not know HTML or do not have the knowledge to create your own templates.

When talking about paid templates there is a big difference in premium templates rather than those which are given for free. This is especially true when you are using these templates for WordPress or Joomla. A paid template offers unlimited customization as well as advanced functionality features. They cannot be easily hacked since they have been made and coded by web professionals. They have undergone testing for quality purposes.

Here Are Some Advantages of Using Paid Blog Templates:

            • Provides unique designs tailored to your specific blogging needs.

            • Providesyou with online support in case there are questions or problems that you wish to fix or when you are looking for the solution to a problem.

            • Protects your blog against hackers and malicious code.

            • Allows you to modify the copyright links so that you can allow the links that you want.

            • Provides you with a wide range of features. As a user subscribing to blog templates can give you access to the code so that you can change your theme colors, increase your website columns, allows you to add social media network links, videos and a whole lot more.

As you can see if you are serious about earning through your blog it would be wiser to pick a paid blog template over a free one any time of the day. As an online business owner paying for blog templates can be beneficial for you in the long run. It will also save you on hassles later on down the road. Wait with expectation as you see how your website visitors will flock to your new blog site. By then you will know that you have made the right choice and best decision ever.

8 Tips for Designing a Great Website

Square buttons, round buttons, flashy buttons … will they match my shoes, my handbag or my tie? Are you stuck in a maze of buttons, headings, bullets, sub-headings and colour schemes?

STOP!!!!

Take a deep breath and read some practical tips for professional looking websites.

1. Select a colour scheme and stick to it.

If your company has a logo or preferred colours on its stationery that’s a good start. For those of you starting from scratch, choose two or three complementary colours and stick with them – don’t change colours on every page.

The most common colour schemes include:

- Red, yellow and white
- Blue and white
- Red, grey and white
- Blue, orange and white
- Yellow, grey and white.

If you’re not sure what colour scheme to choose, surf the internet and find a website that you like. You can then model your colour scheme on what already exists.

2. Use templates.

Can’t find a website you really like? Another option is to choose a template. There are many templates or pre-set designs. These come as part of your web design software (such as FrontPage) or you can check out some websites that specialise in designing templates.

Visit:

www.web4business.com.au emplates1.htm
www.newtemps.com
www.website-templates-resale-rights.com
www.123webtemplatesandmore.com

3. Provide an easy to use navigation system.

This is one of the most important issues to consider when designing a website. You need to ensure your visitors can find what they are looking for easily. Most websites either display their navigation bar on the left or at the top. And since most people are used to this type of navigation, it’s best to stick with it.

It also helps to include your navigation bar at the bottom of each page to save your visitors from having to scroll back to the top.

4. Don’t go overboard on special effects

Whilst it is ok to have one or two special effects to jazz up your website, spinning graphics and logos often distract your visitor from the content, not to mention they can take too long to download. Your visitors may click away even before your spinning logo finishes loading.
5. Backgrounds

Ensure your visitors can read the text on the background, ie. no black writing on dark blue background or yellow on white. Also be careful that your links are visible before and after being visited. The default for links in most programs is blue (before being visited) and burgundy (after being visited), so if you have a dark background, ensure your links are light.

6. External Links

It is a good idea to open links to other websites in a new window. That way your visitors can easily return to your site when they are finished browsing the external link

7. Site Map & Search Feature

If you website is more than 15 pages, it is useful to have a site map or a “Search” feature to ensure your visitors can easily find what they’re looking for.

8. Content is King

While it is important that your website looks clean and professional, it is far more important that you concentrate your efforts on the content and promotion.

If you want a professional website, things to stay away from include:

1. Flash intros, revolving globes, bevelled line separators, animated mail boxes
2. Loads of pop up or pop under boxes
3. Autoplay music. Allow your customer to play music only if they choose.
4. Hit counters of the free variety, which say “you are 27th visitor”
5. Date and time stamps, unless your website is updated daily or weekly
6. Busy backgrounds.

Don’t sweat the small stuff and get yourself focussed on what to include on the website and the best way to promote it. We will cover these topics in future articles.

This article is written by Ivana Katz whi is the owner of Websites 4 Small Business – www.web4business.com.au, a company specialising in the design and promotion of small and home-based business websites.

While there are many reasons to blog, there are two primary uses that are becoming more widespread with blogging: To game Google Adsense, and to also game the search engines for better rankings.

Since Blogs are known to the search engines as daily snippets of information that are updated on a frequent basis, they get a lot of preference in the search results.

So from this, how do you optimize your blog?

Depending on the service you utilize, there are still some basics that you can apply. The two biggest blogging sites are WordPress and Blogger. If you are looking for an advantage with SEO, you should use Blogger since they are owned by Google, and you’ll be indexed quicker.

Blogs aren’t all that much different than a site. The power of a blog is from the frequency of the posting. If the search engines see a pattern of 3 postings per day, they will be very active on spidering that site. Depending on the topic of the blog, you may be able to boost your blog in the rankings if it’s related to a hot topic on the Internet.

Now, to the actual optimization.

Since blogs are typically a few pages long, you only need to establish a few rules that will be applied sitewide:

Use an interesting title – Also known as linkbaiting – your title should captivate the user to read more

Try to use your blog keywords in the title – while it may be hard to always do this, by keeping the title related to the topic, your blog will always be relevant

Use the H1 tags – All blog editors allow for custom templates, so be sure to stylize your blog title in the H1 tags

Link to other blogs – Find other related blogs that your readers might find interesting, and ask for a link in return

Don’t forget about your archives – You may post a topic that isn’t hot at the moment, but comes up later – make sure your readers can find that posting

As stated above, the key to a successful blog is frequent postings. You don’t need to write up an article everytime, two paragraphs and maybe some resource links is what a typical posting should be comprised of.
