Lately I’ve noticed several interesting site sales on DP and all had the same in common:

- sellers were very eager to sell their sites quick and asked for quick offers
- sellers provided only partial and outdated stats data
- all looked like very good deals

Many of the deals were quite enticing and the stats and data seemed realistic enough, so I dug deeper and as expected they were all scams, but following a very interesting pattern.

The scammers tried to “sell” sites that were previously listed for sale on flippa, so they used the screenshots and data posted by the actual owners on flippa at the time of the auction. Some of these were still active, some ended unsold. After an auction ends on flippa the screenshots are no longer visible. It’s also fairly easy to make similar, “updated”, fake screenshots having the original.

This is not a “grey” type of scam where site owners would slightly exaggerate their stats, round it up, or even show fake screenshots. The scammers didn’t own any sites and those who fell victim and sent them the cash through paypal quickly to buy it never got anything in return.

How can you spot a scam like that?

1. First and foremost a quick google search for the site will show if there was a flippa auction or if it was for sale anywhere else before so that the scammer could gather the data from there.
2. Request the scammer to prove ownership by inserting some unique text in the site code – this is the easiest way to prove he actually owns the site.
3. Further background checks on the seller, his forum/email/messenger ids will frequently reveal any previous misdoings.

Stay safe, don’t rush and do proper due diligence before any purchase!

We’re the first domain registrar to come out and say it…

Yes, we do plan on selling .XXX domains when they become available.

Read on to learn why.

Background on .XXX

ICANN has debated and delayed the creation of .XXX for years, but in late March they finally decided to allow it. During the debate back and forth, various pro-family groups came out against it, saying it would lead to the proliferation of obscene content online. At the same time, other pro-family groups came out in favor of .XXX with the reasoning that it would allow for greater filtering of adult content so that it becomes easier to block, etc. Many adult industry groups also expressed concerns with .XXX, fearing that there might be a push to restrict all adult content to only those domains rather than the .COM, .NET, and other domains currently in use today for adult content.

With all the various positions for or against .XXX, ICM Registry (the registry that will manage .XXX) is moving forward on releasing the new TLD with a focus on “promoting online responsibility” and making it clear that adult sites will not be forced to use .XXX, but instead will be encouraged to utilize good business practices including safeguarding children from adult content.

Why Domain.com Will Offer .XXX

While some competitors are busy shooting elephants and filming their next racy commercials that could probably use their own .XXX domain, we are thinking about ways to improve the Internet for both users and content creators. Adult content will continue to exist online regardless of whether or not .XXX is introduced, but .XXX will help segment that content so that those who don’t want to view it or should not view it can filter it out.

At Domain.com, we strive to help reduce spam and low-quality sites, improve online safety, provide relevant information to visitors, and improve the organization and categorization of websites. .XXX will help in all of these categories, because it, along with the upcoming imminent launch of many new TLDs, will help to structure and segment the web so that visitors have context for what to expect on a website before they even visit. In this case, more options is better, and new TLDs will aid in direct navigation to websites as well as providing indicators to search engines and search engine users of content type. Just as you wouldn’t visit a .XXX site expecting a blog about healthy eating, you wouldn’t visit a .FOOD site expecting adult content.

We see .XXX as just one of many TLDs coming, and we want to offer as many of them as possible as long as it makes business sense for us to do so. We don’t want to set a precedent of limiting customers’ options when they purchase domains, so offering .XXX is just one step towards offering customers a huge variety of TLDs to find the one that’s the right fit for their site.

While .XXX is likely to be one of the more controversial new TLDs coming out, we’re excited to be able to offer our customers an even greater number of options for their websites.

Buying and selling domain names online has become a very profitable business. With the internet more than doubling its size in the past decade it is easy to see how much money there really is in domain names. Every new web site has a name, or needs a name in order to exist. Domain names are absolutely mandatory for web sites, so there is a massive market that is based on simple supply and demand.

As the internet continues to expand it is very unlikely that the supply will outweigh the demand. In fact, it is almost a statistical impossibility, considering the amount of domain names left and the amount of people that are trying to buy domains. If you’re wondering why this incredibly profitable business opportunity has been kept from you for so long, keep reading to discover some of the secrets of buying and selling domain names.

Finding the Domain Name

The first step in buying and selling domain names is finding the name. You need to find a name that is almost guaranteed to be sold again in the near future. While this may seem like a difficult task, there are endless opportunities created by a sea of individual markets and industries. All you have to do is find a keyword or interesting name that would be valuable to a buyer.

Most domain sellers wont tell you that they use auction sites and certain tools to find out what kind of names are hot at the moment. Simply visit your favorite site auction site and checkout some of the current auctions. Look for the auctions that are currently being bid on the most. If you can emulate that success by picking a similar name then you’ll be able to consistently profit from buying and selling domain names.

You can also use the latest trends to your advantage by purchasing domain names that are relevant to new hot topics that are being frequently searched for in search engines. To find this information you can use a tool like Google Trends. If the topic is hot and you find a matching domain name then you can be sure that someone will bid on the name and give you more than what you paid for it.

Selling the Domain Name vs. Parking It

Once you have acquired a good domain name you can start making small amounts of money from it right away, or you can sell it for a more hefty and lump sum profit. A lot of people don’t know what domain parking is. When you park a domain for monetary purposes you are actually leasing that domain name to an advertising company that will pay you to place ads on your pages. Obviously there is a potential for an extra revenue stream, however it would take hundreds of parked domains, which could be a hassle to manage.

On the other hand, selling the domain will give you a larger amount of money, sometimes entering into the range of thousands of dollars. There are a variety of ways to sell your domain.
