One of the first thing that any new web master thinks of for their potential web site is its domain name. The domain name is among your companies main forms of branding, and hence, focusing on the domain name is understandable. What we have to remember is that along with it comes the people willing to milk these new users out of their cash with the lure of something “new” that will give them an edge. You can check the domain name availability on pcnames.com.

As of December 2009 more than 84 million .com domain names alone existed, meaning that those new to the game are finding all of the best words and phrases long since squeezed out. The desire to find an work around this problem may seem tempting. Here’s why, for the most part, you don’t want to fall for such tactics.

Beware of new formats

Now and then you’ll get some exciting piece of spam mail or other advertisement talking about the new top level domains that exist and how you need to register. “Register www.oh.yes right now before someone else does!” The businessman in you may want to beat other people to the punch, but hold your horses. This is almost always a mirage.

If the exciting solicitation is over a new top-level domain, know that the adoption of these is a slow, agonizing process that often takes years to extend over the web. Even if the new top-level domain does exist, often its zones are not picked up by everyone, meaning that not everyone will see your site even if the domain is otherwise operational.

Even worse sometimes only alphanumerics and dashes (“-”) are allowed. The reason this is worse than the top-level domain problem is that in addition to your domain not necessarily propagating, server software may not be setup to handle this new syntax, and with the potential security problems inherent to it no host would change this setting just for you.

Stay away from the reselling racket

You might instead get an offer to purchase a domain name. These aren’t scams: they are domains which are valid, correctly registered, which work and which can be safely transferred to your name for operation. That doesn’t, though, mean that it’s worth the price. It’s now commonplace for domain names to be simple combinations of words and numbers that are easy and catchy to remember but which aren’t yet taken (example: westernsaturn.com). Domains are cheap enough now that paying more for someone’s leftovers usually just isn’t worth it.

Don’t even think at this point about trying to get into this market, either. As stated, most good names are taken, and there are tons of people fighting for the expired ones.

If it becomes obvious that some top-level domain is well supported, such as .CO, and is being used by the business world in a serious capacity, only then should you consider jumping in. If not, there’s no reason not to stick with what works for everyone else, and just go with modernmachomanlyman.com (indeed, that’s available too).
If you have number of domains think of choosing multiple domain hosting and host unlimited domains on one account.

ICANN has been strongly defending the newly approved proposal to introduce thousands of new Internet domain names. The California-based nonprofit was recently attacked by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) in a letter expressing fervent concerns with the new policy. As a result, ICANN has publicly defended the process and policy.

Association of National Advertisers

The ANA consists of major U.S. corporations such as Apple, Home Depot and Verizon who raised many issues with the most critical being that the trademark owners are required to defend their brands as a result of the introduction of so many new domain names and extensions. They indicated that the expense to conduct such a task will be extraordinary.

Opposition of the New System

Furthermore, the association argues that many companies will be compelled to apply for the all new top-level domains related to their business at $ 185,000 per domain name. Additionally, the ANA claims ICANN is failing to follow its own rules by requiring that its policies are to be adopted through a bottom-up consensus process. Therefore, the organization has called on ICANN to withdraw the proposal or work in conjunction with trademark owners to revise it.

ICANN’s Response

ICANN sent a written response to the ANA that noted Internet stakeholders have had ample time to comment on the new proposal. Also, they stated that many of the suggestions proposed by the ANA were included in the final proposal, approved June 2011.

Statement from the CEO

The CEO of ICANN quantified that the declarations in the statement from ANA were problematic in several ways with the most sever mischaracterizations regarding the ICANN approval process. The domain name process has been developed over six years of implementation planning and policy. There have been a variety of significant actions taken to find equilibrium amongst all vested parties while protecting them.

He additionally stated that ICANN will vigorously defend the model while defending its duty to act in accordance with the established bottom-up process. Additionally, this covers the broad public interest of the entire global Internet community as opposed to the interests of specific parties or groups.

ICANN knew once the process was released to the public and commercial entities that they would be vigorously defending it to ensure its implementation. Although there are only several months until the registration officially opens, there will definitely be additional controversies that are publicly announced.

The number of top-level domains is expected to become much more populated in the coming years. The landscape for this explosion will begin in the coming months so battles for branding and digital turf are expected to get ugly. This is a result of the decisions made by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers to create new domain name extensions for a more brand-able online appeal. For instance a DuPont top-level name could be .DuPont.

Current Preparations

A local Internet lawyer is already preparing to fight for one of his clients for .Philly. New York City officials have clearly indicated that .NYC is a civic asset and has already taken the necessary steps to preserve the domain name. Additionally, large companies are scooping up their domain name extensions such as .Microsoft, .Google and .Ford.

Application Process

Unfortunately, the rules enforced by ICANN will not stop at new entrants. Beginning January 2012, the application process will become official. However, ICANN is only expecting several hundred domain registrants to pay the $ 185,000 application fee. Unfortunately, qualified applicants will be able to create domain names based on any word.

Supporter Reaction

To supporters of the new extensions, this has been a long time coming. They are claiming that customers are looking for a way to capture their preferences. Therefore, businesses should not be restricted by the usual .com’s, .net’s and .org’s. Instead, they should be able to try .Music or .Food.

Recognition of Upcoming Challenges

Unfortunately, these same supporters recognize that the new rules will inevitably cause turf-battles and they are unsure how they will pan out. During the early years of the Internet, similar legal turf-wars were over the control of generic domain names with high value. The new laws will indefinitely change that aspect of domain names by depreciating the value of generic .com domain names as a result of the endless possibilities.

Critic’s Reaction

Critics of the new Internet law view this as creating duplication (from the past) and redundancy rather than implementing a value-added system. The only positive impact it will have on business is for those in the domain name registry industry.

It appears as if this change implemented by ICANN is going to cause more problems than its worth. At the same time this could improve company branding and increase online business. It is difficult to predict the outcome once the dust settles.

Finding the right domain name for your website is a crucial aspect of beginning a successful online endeavor, regardless of the industry or niche you choose to pursue. The domain name is effectively your online brand, and is the name that your site visitors will remember when discussing your website with friends. Although the majority of excellent domain names have been registered already, there are still many available, and with the right techniques it is possible to find valuable domain names relatively easily. Unfortunately, the majority of novice webmasters choose domain names for all the wrong reasons. The following paragraphs describe the process of determining whether a domain name is actually valuable.

Keywords and SEO Attributes

The best way to find a domain name that carries intrinsic value is to look for names that contain popularly searched for keywords. These domains have the potential to generate web traffic instantly, with minimal effort required on behalf of the webmaster. Domain names that contain keywords are usually referred to as “exact match domains”, and are by far the most desirable. Exact match domains give webmasters the ability to instantly capitalize on organic search engine traffic, without having to perform all of the usual SEO tasks. Some domains that have recently expired also retain SEO attributes like backlinks and PageRank. Purchasing recently expired domains is also a good way to find valuable domains, as these domains were probably registered by webmasters for a specific reason.

Commerciality and Profitability

Another aspect to consider is the commerciality of the domain name. While finding exact match domains is a good first step, it wouldn’t make much sense if the keyword is not a “buying” keyword. In other words, some keywords are likely to be typed into a search engine when an individual is looking to purchase an item, while other keywords are more likely to be used when an individual is simply looking for free information. For example, the domain name “howtorideabike.com”would not be nearly as profitable as “qualitysportsbikes.com”, since the latter is quite obviously a keyword that an individual would use when they were looking to purchase a sports bike, and would therefore be capable of generating more advertising and sales revenue.

Memorability and Relevance

A domain name should also be memorable and relevant to the niche, as this will boost the return rates of site visitors. An alternative method to using exact match domains is to register a domain name that broadly covers the entire niche, so that the site can be populated with content that contains various keywords relative to that industry. This ultimately allows the webmaster to focus on a broader range of keywords and solicit more web traffic in the long-term. However, this method of domain registration usually requires more work on behalf of the webmaster, as they will have to put forth effort to establish the site as an authority site before it will rank effectively for a multitude of keywords.

(The Hosting News) – The growing popularity of pad devices and tablet devices has recently enticed the owners of Pad.com to reconsider their plans for the domain name. After having run Pad.com as their company’s site for over two decades, they have decided to release this premium domain name and sell it in auction to the highest bidder, starting in auction on March 26, 2011.

Like a fine wine, Pad.com is rare and aged. With an original creation date of December 5th 1990, the three letter domain is over 20 years old. A rare antique and an artifact literally from the very early days of the Internet. The domain name has been used as the website for a boutique company entitled “Pad Business Solutions”. While “PAD” has many meanings in many industries, this business solutions company previously decided to brand itself using this word because PAD happens to be the initials of the owner. The owner is moving on, and is passing the torch. The current owner hopes to see the domain name be used for any company in any related “Pad” industry.

You can probably think of many uses for the domain name, such as Pad meaning a Home, like a Bachelor Pad. The domain could therefore be an international real estate destination. How about a helicopter pad construction company, or a launch pad for ideas. Other uses could be for a sanitary pad company such as Kotex, Playtex, Poise, Always, Stayfree, and the list goes on. How about a name for a Thai eatery, Pad meaning fried Thai food (pad Thai). The domain could be used for a mouse pad company. Did you know that the mouse pad in the future will be touchscreen. One other use would be for a pad company as in padding, such as elbow pads, knee pads, other sporting goods pads… and also carpet pad, and the list really goes on. And of course, surely in today’s rapidly changing times, when terms like “My Pad” and “iPad” are becoming more and more popular as synonyms to the precious personal electronic devices we all either already have, or wish to have, this domain name can easily become THE destination site for all kinds of Pad devices.

With it’s current reserve price, this generic domain is a safe and sure investment that will do really good to any one of the largest pad and tablet companies. A representative from Bido stated: “The one buyer who will be the quickest to realize the promising potential here is going to have for themselves a great win, and gain an unfair advantage over their competition, in whatever industry they happen to be in. The PAD name is highly brandable and memorable without a doubt. It’s such a cliché, but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire rights to the PAD.com name, and depending on who buys it in our auction, the name may never be for sale again, at any price.”.

The Bido representative continued, “With an appraised value of $ 268,000 USD, the current reserve of $ 90,000 USD (ninety thousand), is a reserve price that is low enough to entice bidders to participate.” The auction company Bido.com feels that this asset is a rock solid investment for any prospective purchaser. But this precious gem will likely land in the hands of one of the world’s largest corporations. Companies such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, Motorola, Samsung, Quaduro, bModo, Neofonie, BestBuy, Fujitsu, Axiotron, Dixons, Asus, ATT, IBM, RIM, ZTE, HP, LG, and Dell, just to name a few, are all natural prospects and potential buyers, and are welcome to participate. But they must act fast because the domain will sell to the highest bidder.

The auction for exclusive ownership rights to the Pad.com domain name starts on March 26, 2011 at 3:30 pm EST and runs for 4 days. Visit http://Bido.com/Pad.com to participate or just watch the auction.
